"It Was Good"

September 21, 2018 • Momcents

Every day my kids walk in the door from school and the first question out of my mouth is always, "how was your day?" And their answer is almost always, "it was good!" They then put their stuff away, or let's be honest, throw their backpacks and shoes down on the floor and head to the kitchen for a snack. Then they either are really motived to get homework done or just want to zone out and chill.  All the while I'm still dying to know ALL about their day. Here are a few things I have learned.  Depending on the kiddo, some kids just want to come home and just be or sit and watch tv while they decompress from a full day.  Some want to talk (that would be my daughter Ella).  Some will tell you about their day on their own timing.  I also found that if I am more specific with my questions that I can get more out of them. For example, what did you do in Health and Fitness today (formally known as PE)?  Or tell me 5 things about your day.

I also found this great list I wanted to share of other creative questions I found on a website called aviewfromhome.com.

Questions to ask your kids after school instead of "how was your day?"

  • What made you smile today?
  • Can you show me an example of kindness you saw/showed?
  • What did you do that was creative?
  • Who did you sit with at lunch?
  • Was anyone gone in your class?
  • Tell me something you know today that you didn't know yesterday.
  • What was the hardest rule to follow today?
  • If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?
  • What made your teacher smile?
  • What made your teacher frown?
  • If you could sit next to anyone in your class, who would it be?
  • What kind of person were you today?
